Eating Healthy and Not Gaining Weight, Even During the Holiday Season…

Of course eating healthy and nutritiously isn’t ever easy during the holiday season.

In fact it can be almost impossible. Of course this is the time of the year when all the good stuff comes out. All the aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents seem to try to outdo one another with the best dish…and of course it’s your job as a loving family member to help them decide who wins.

You’re the taste tester. Someone’s got to do it after all…right?  It’s hard to pass up a table like this…

But then there’s that little snafu called the diet that you’ve been on. There’s the chance of adding the extra pounds to the body that you’ve been working hard to keep in shape.

The secret however to eating healthy during the holidays and not gaining too many extra pounds is to plan strategically. I know… the last thing you want to do is have to think before you sit down for dinner. But if you strategize now, before the food hits the table, then you’ll likely do much better. Yeah, you’re still going to cheat, but you may not gorge yourself as much as you normally would.

Even if its helps block of few pounds from ending up on the backside, then it’s well worth it.

5 Step Strategy to Eating Healthy (More Healthy at Least) Over the Holidays

Step 1: Don’t starve yourself all day until you get to the dinner… Many times on Christmas morning we get busy and we actually forget to eat breakfast. It’s not hard to do…opening presents, wrestling things out of the packages, putting toys together, breaking up fights, finding batteries…you know the drill.

So breakfast gets put on the back burner. Don’t do that. It’ll lead to gorging when you finally sit down. Not only that, it’ll cause you to snack on stuff you don’t need.

One great thing you can do, which is fast and simple, is to simply make yourself a protein rich meal replacement shake in the morning. Very simple, very fast, and very nutritious! It will keep you full…and it won’t have you snacking on all those things that you shouldn’t.

Step 2: Snack Strategically… Eating nutritiously during the holiday season is twice as hard because of all the darned snacks. Every type of chocolate, cake, bread roll, candy, eggnog (sometimes a snack, sometimes a cocktail icon smile Eating Healthy and Not Gaining Weight Even During the Holiday Season ), etc. is laid out for you to enjoy to your heart’s content.  Plus when you are sitting around all day just enjoying family time, it’s so easy to just snack all day long.

However one thing that is usually abundantly available, that is nutritious for you, are nuts. Nuts are full of great nutrition for you, and they contain healthy fats and protein that your body needs. Stick with the almonds, walnuts, cashews, and if you can get your hands on them… macadamia nuts.

These will also help you feel fuller until dinner time comes around, and if they’re shelled you might actually have to do some work getting to them…which is better because it slows you down. Not to mention that raw nuts are significantly better for you than roasted.

If there are any veggie trays out, snack on celery, carrots, etc.

Step 3: Watch Your Plate Size…

One of the easiest ways to eat healthy during a holiday dinner is to simply grab a smaller plate.

We’ve all seen the giant discs that mothers, grandmothers, and aunts like to serve up during Christmas dinner. These things are humungous, and at any normal dinner would be the serving plates. But for some reason we give it a pass during this time.

If you grab a smaller plate, you’ll eat less, period. I know, you’re thinking “I’m just going to fill it up again”…and again. You may think that, but a funny thing happens – mentally – when you finish your plate…you’re not hungry anymore. Yes, that’s even when the plate’s smaller! But chances are if you do go back for seconds, you’ll not fill the plate up quite as full.

Step 4: Load Up on the Meat and Veggies… Listen, if eating healthy is important to you, there’s no better time to do it than during the holiday season. That’s because the things that are best for you are made extra yummy.

Again, it’s an all out war (though silent and unspoken (sometimes)) between those members of your family who want to be The Next Food Network Star. Who knows that may include you too. But the point is that the competition is fierce and you get to enjoy these spoils of war.

This means that everything is especially good, and therefore sticking to meat and veggies isn’t going to be torture. It’s going to be enjoyable. So enjoy it, and the best part is that when you stick with the meats and veggies… and go light on the breads and potatoes…you CAN fill that plate up a second time without worry.  Try to stay away from all the “bad” carbohydrates and sugars.

Step 5: Plan to Work It All Off the Next Day… One of the best ways to fix what you’ve broken when you haven’t been eating healthy is to do some exercise, and work it off…plus it will make you feel a lot better afterwards.

It’s really your last resort, so you may as well plan to do it before you even mess up your diet and healthy eating regime right?

And here’s the best part about that…

Most people wait until after New Years Day to start in on their resolutions. However if you start the day after Christmas, by the time New Years rolls around, you’re already a week into it.
